During the International Synth Design Hackathon 2023, we discovered a new planet. The planet of subtle stirring. We called it ‘Frederic-213’, as Frederic Chopin was a master of gentle blending of harmonies. We’re approaching his 213th birthday and we’d like to celebrate it by searching for harmonies of the universe. Subtle movements let us put Frederic-213 at the right point in space-time, exploring the wide range of smoothly changing chords. ‘Frederic 213’ apart from being a sound creation tool is also a game aimed at achieving a certain harmonic chord, different for each level.

the tech

How does it work?

To develop this device, we used a gyroscope and accelerometer to gather position and movement data of the object in three axes. We translated this information into varying frequencies of three distinct sounds spanning two octaves. Three sounds were assigned to a specific axis to achieve a complex harmony. We utilized the Arduino IDE software for Daisy Seed Board and developed a custom code, controlling sound synthesis and LED lights. Green color of all LED lights indicates the correct position, which means that the consonance has been found and a new harmony target is set.
