A mannequin stands in the corner of the room, shrouded in darkness. A fabric of interwoven and reactive samples fill the air with fear. As you approach the figure, sonic tension builds, dissuading you from advancing. Standing face to face, confronting your fear, you reach out and grab the figure’s outstretched hand. The thick tension is lifted and a sense of safety and familiarity ripples across the room. What was once a foreign and unwelcome place suddenly becomes nostalgic and safe.

How does it work?

How does it work? The installation involves two sensors, a “Kinect” depth/motion sensor and an Arduino touch sensor. Set up adjacent to the mannequin, the Kinect senses as the participant gets closer and moves quickly. The touch sensor is hidden in the palm of the mannequin’s hand, which triggers the resolution of the installation. The data is sent to Max 8, where a number of values are calculated. These are then sent to a package within Max 8 called “ppooll” via OSC where they control parameters in the soundscape of the installation.
